1. Light: Keep It Bright but Indirect

Air plants prefer indirect filtered light, just like they’d receive in their native tropical environments, hanging from tree branches under dappled sunlight.

✅ Best lighting:

  1. Near a bright window with a sheer curtain
  2. Under grow lights (LED full spectrum)
  3. Well-lit rooms away from harsh midday sun

🚫 Avoid:

  1. Full direct sun exposure (can cause burns)
  2. Dim rooms or corners with no natural light

🌞 Most air plants do not like direct sunlight!

2. Watering: Soak, Shake & Dry

Xerographica Tillandsia

Watering is one of the most important (and often misunderstood) parts of air plant care. But don’t worry—it’s easier than it sounds!

Most air plants only need water once a week.

Here’s the basic method:

  1. Soak your plant in room-temperature water for 15–30 minutes
  2. Shake off excess water from the leaves
  3. Dry upside down in a well-ventilated area (this prevents rot)

💡 In very dry or hot climates, you may want to mist in between soakings or water twice a week.

3. Pruning: Keep Your Plant Looking Fresh

Just like any houseplant, air plants benefit from a little grooming every now and then.

When and how to prune:

  1. Use clean, sharp scissors
  2. Trim brown or dry leaf tips gently
  3. After blooming, you can cut the flower spike to encourage pup production

🌸 Pruning not only improves appearance—it supports healthy growth, too.

Caring for Tillandsias Is Easier Than You Think

From proper lighting to pruning blooms and propagating pups, Tillandsias are truly beginner-friendly plants—yet still fascinating for seasoned plant lovers.

Whether you’re decorating a shelf, creating terrariums for a shop, or gifting plants to loved ones, these easy-care beauties adapt to your style and space.
